About EDT

What We Do?
Many of our pupils come to us with varying degrees of theory or driving experience, some may have none at all, others have the basics or concept of driving, some may understand vehicle controls.

Whatever your current experience, we endeavor to build upon the experience you have and instill the ability and confidence necessary to become a safe driver for life, and not to simply pass the driving test. In addition, we will impart the RSA's EDT driver syllabus from commencement to completion, we can even act as your sponsor while teaching you at the same time.

Information on (EDT)

It is now a legal requirement to undertake a driving test. You must first complete all 12 EDT stages and have an ADI and sponsor logbook completed. It should be noted that stages does not necessarily mean lessons numbers, as it may take additional lessons to complete to competence level, it may seem complicated now, but we are totally conversant with any query you may have about EDT and its process.

Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory training syllabus put in place by the Road Safety Authority to ensure a minimum standard for learner drivers prior to the driving test. The EDT syllabus is broken down into 12 units of learning, taken from and explained within the booklet LDT or Learner Driver Training booklet. Essentially this is the commencement of the RSA's new Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme for young drivers, which is intended to be introduced gradually to improve road safety in Ireland. The 12 Units of

Learning Explained :
Lesson 1: Car Controls & Safety Checks
Lesson 2: Correct Positioning
Lesson 3: Changing Direction
Lesson 4: Progression Management
Lesson 5: Correct Positioning

Note: Lessons Vs Units of Learning
It should also be noted by pupils and sponsors alike, that these are not just 12 lessons. Simply put, these are "units of learning" on the above syllabus, each section could be broken down into beginner, intermediate, and competent stages. It is also advised that you read the Learner Driver Syllabus or LDT which breaks down the EDT syllabus into detailed content.

Remember, as no two people learn at the same pace, it may take some time and indeed practice to complete and become competent in the lesson unit numbers as stated above. ..... More information available at www.rsa.ie regarding EDT.
